Antonio was told he needed surgery, but he had no insurance and couldn’t afford to pay cash. After years of suffering, within a month of working with St. Mary’s Health Clinics, Antonio was thrilled to learn he had been approved for knee surgery through the Allina Partners Care Program.
After the successful surgery, SMHC staff members almost didn’t recognize him. His face was beaming with joy, and he looked so much younger. For the first time in many years, he was pain free.
Antonio was so grateful for the help he had received from St. Mary’s Health Clinics that he joined the St. Mary’s team on a five-mile breast cancer walk. Thanks to St. Mary’s Health Clinics, Antonio’s dream of having healthy knees has become a reality.
“I used to walk 50 feet to the mailbox and back slower than a 90-year-old man and collapsed on the couch pretty much for the rest of the day.” he says. “That’s where I was eight months ago. Now, I’m running again. I was in such a dark place; but St. Mary’s Health Clinics pulled me through the darkness, and I’m back. And my kids still have their dad.
“If St. Mary's Health Clinics didn't exist, patients would have to use acute care, urgent care, and emergency rooms for their health care. And not only is that not okay for the patient, but they are also not going to get the best care for their diabetes or high blood pressures in an ER. Patients who have chronic care need a home base and a clinic that can provide refills and prevent crises. St. Mary's Health Clinics is essential.”
